As soon as we entered our new ward Andy and I were called to be Cub Scout Leaders in the Bear Den. That is the boys from 9-10. A couple, the week before, was released from the nursery and i was crossing my fingers that we were going to fill that vacancy. To both of our surprise we were called to work with the scouts. It has been an adventure so far. One of my favorite moments was when we had a fun lesson learning about folklore. We gave them a sheet that had a matching game of characters to there description. One boy was so upset. "THIS IS CHURCH NOT SCHOOL!!" We had to remind him that it wasn't a church activity either. Cub Scouts is all about teaching young boys important skills for life. Their motto this year is Do Your Best.
We are slowly learning how the requirements and awards work. We did our first Blue and Gold Banquet which is a pretty big deal. We were told by some higher up cub scouter's that we needed to plan the event about 5 months in advance! Our whole team of leaders felt ok about waiting about a month before to get it together and it turned out great! I was glad Andy and i, along with another couple, were in charge of decorations. The theme of our banquet was Happy Birthday Cub Scouts! i wrapped empty boxes in blue and yellow wrapping paper for the table center pieces. The whole thing turned out really cute. The kids were sorely disappointed that they didn't get to open the presents. Luckily we put lots of fun toys on the table to be played with. I enjoy getting to know the parents.
I love making the boys yummy but healthy treats. I love letting Andy take care of them when they are rowdy. He is so patient and has there best interest in mind.
Cub Scouts is a great program! I am grateful that Andy and I are able to serve in this calling. It's not only our church duty but our Patriotic duty as well. I look forward to putting my own boys through the program someday.
